9th Workshop on Ethics and Integrity of Governance

Call for papers

The Study Group on Ethics and Integrity of Governance brings together academics and practitioners interested in the ethical dimension of administration and organization. The group’s mission is to establish a long-term network aimed at stimulating research on public sector integrity and ethics in Europe. The Study Group was launched at the 2003 EGPA Annual Conference and had an average attendance of about 40 participants in the 9 subsequent annual meetings. The group also co-organized two specialized conferences: the 2005 Transatlantic Dialogue in Leuven and the 2009 Global Dialogue in Amsterdam.

The aim of the annual sessions is to present an overview of the cutting-edge academic research on ethics and integrity of governance with relevance for the practice of European governance and government. The Study Group particularly wants to contribute to making progress in comparative research, building on previous initiatives in transnational and global dialogues and the increasing cooperation between European researchers. This year the group will particularly pay attention to East-West cooperation, given that the session will take place in Bucharest, Romania.

For more information on the study group, please check our website: www.egpa-ethics.eu

For the Bucharest conference in September 2011, we invite papers within the broad field of ethics and integrity of governance. Possible themes could include (but are not limited to) the following:
-Integrity policies: What works, how and when?

-What is the state of public integrity in Eastern Europe; what are the good and bad developments?

- Criminological perspectives on corruption and employee deviance

-Historical and sociological analyses of ethics in governance in countries or European regions

-Concepts of administrative ethics research

-Methodologies of administrative ethics research

-Developments of public integrity (and corruption) within administrations (and predictions)

-(Conflicting) public values

-Normative analyses of public governance

As usual, we like to emphasize that the study group particularly welcomes comparative research (comparing respectively countries and organizations). Single case studies can only be considered on the condition that they go beyond mere description and are embedded in a theoretical framework.

Paper proposals should be e-mailed before May 1st, 2011 to both:
- Jeroen Maesschalck, Leuven Institute of Criminology, K.U.Leuven, e-mail: jeroen.maesschalck@law.kuleuven.be
- Gjalt de Graaf, Department of Governance Studies, VU Amsterdam, e-mail:  g.de.graaf@vu.nl

Sixth annual EGPA PhD WORKSHOP, with a special track on public ethics and integrity

In addition to the Study Group’s regular sessions, PhD students can also participate in the sixth annual EGPA PhD-workshop, that will this year include a special track for doctoral students doing research on “public ethics and integrity.” It will take place September 5th-6th 2011, immediately preceding the annual EGPA conference in Bucharest. This special track is meant to offer specialized knowledge on doing empirical research in the field of public ethics as well as an exchange on methods, research strategies, and experiences.

Deadline for the submission of an extended abstract by e-mail is May 1st 2011. Please email your abstract to one of the workshop convenors: Prof. Christoph Reichard (University of Potsdam) (reichard@t-online.de) or Dr. Frank Bannister (Trinity College Dublin) (Frank.Bannister@tcd.ie).

For further information on the public ethics track please contact Dr. Patrick von Maravic (Zeppelin University, e-mail: pvonmaravic@zeppelin-university.de).

An extended call for papers will be available from the workshop convenors shortly and can be downloaded from the EGPA website as well as from the website of this study group at www.egpa-ethics.eu
