Debate: The Future of Professionalism

Chair: Bram VERSCHUERE

The nature of professionalism has been a key issue in public governance discussions during the past decades. This session presents a provocative new book on the subject.

The new publication ‘Professional Pride’ focuss on professional

identities among police officers, teachers, judges, doctors, nurses, social workers and other professionals. The book is aimed at supporting this development and takes a stand against trends, such as managerialism, that hollow out professional practice.

But is this perspective on the issue valid? Does it raise the right questions? Taco Brandsen, Marlies Honingh and Willem Trommel will present critical reflections on the book and kick off the discussion.

10.30 – 11.00 Coffee Break
11.00 – 12.30 Session 3

Policy Brief Session: Can we Change the World?

Chair: Willem A. TROMMEL

The EGPA is a distinguished academic forum. However, it is our belief the EGPA’s role as a European forum could be strengthened by addressing policymakers more directly. In our Study Group, we discuss issues of political and social relevance, but their effect on the practice of public administration will be limited if we confine ourselves to academic publication. This is why we will experiment with a first EGPA policy brief.

Willem Trommel, Taco Brandsen and Bram Verschuere have drafted a first version of such a brief and are anxious to receive input.
